10 Positive Anger Guidelines

  • Guideline #1: Anger is brought out into the open – felt, experienced and respected as a basic human reaction to a felt injustice.

  • Guideline #2: You don’t just get angry because you can. Angry reactions are carefully screened.

  • Guideline #3: No one is attacked or hurt.

  • Guideline #4: There is no blaming or accusing.

  • Guideline #5: Instead of making assumptions, you check out where each person is coming from. You also know where you each stand on the issue.

  • Guideline #6: When the anger comes up, your response is to work toward resolving the problem.

  • Guideline #7: The anger is clearly verbalized in ways that other people can understand.

  • Guideline #8: Anger is understood as emotional energy that can be directed in positive ways.

  • Guideline #9: The anger is temporary. It is relinquished once the issue is resolved.

  • Guideline #10: Displaying healthy anger is understood as part of loving someone.

Give yourself some time now to review and absorb these 10 Positive Anger Guidelines. Revisit them often and eventually commit the Guidelines to memory. Then experiment with applying these ideas when anger comes up for you. Also, with time and practice, you and your family members may want to create additional guidelines of your own.
